How to Set Up Your Ledger Wallet

A complete beginner-friendly guide. From unboxing to your first crypto transaction in under 15 minutes.

What You Will Need

  • Your new Ledger device
  • A computer or smartphone
  • USB-C cable (included in box)
  • Pen and recovery phrase sheet (included)
  • 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted time
  • A private, secure location
1

Unbox and Inspect Your Ledger

When your Ledger arrives, carefully inspect the packaging. The box should be factory sealed with no signs of tampering. Inside you will find:

  • The Ledger device
  • USB-C cable
  • Recovery phrase sheet (3 blank cards)
  • Getting started leaflet
  • Keychain strap (Nano models)

Security Warning: If the device arrived with a PIN already set or a recovery phrase pre-filled, DO NOT use it. This means the device has been tampered with. Return it immediately and order directly from Ledger.

2

Download Ledger Live

Visit ledger.com/start and download the official Ledger Live application. It is available for:

  • Windows 10+ (64-bit)
  • macOS 12+
  • Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+)
  • iOS 15+ (for Bluetooth models)
  • Android 10+ (for Bluetooth models)

Important: ONLY download Ledger Live from the official website (ledger.com). Never download it from third-party sources, app stores, or links in emails. Phishing attempts are common.

3

Connect Your Device

Plug in your Ledger device using the included USB-C cable. For Nano X, Stax, and Flex, you can also connect via Bluetooth after initial setup. The device will power on and display a welcome screen.

In Ledger Live, click "Get Started" and select your device model. The app will guide you through a genuine device check to verify your Ledger is authentic.

4

Create Your PIN Code

Select "Set up as new device" on your Ledger. You will be asked to create a PIN code between 4 and 8 digits. This PIN protects physical access to your device.

Tips for a strong PIN: Use at least 6 digits. Avoid obvious patterns like 1234 or your birthday. After 3 wrong PIN attempts, the device resets entirely for your protection.

5

Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your Ledger will generate and display a 24-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). Write down each word in the exact order on the provided recovery sheet.

Critical Security Rules:

  • NEVER take a photo or screenshot of your recovery phrase
  • NEVER type it into any website, app, or computer
  • NEVER share it with anyone, including Ledger support
  • NEVER store it in cloud storage, email, or password managers
  • Write it on PAPER only and store in a secure physical location

Anyone who has your 24-word recovery phrase has full access to your funds. This phrase is your ultimate backup -- if your Ledger is lost or broken, you can restore everything with these 24 words on a new device.

6

Verify Your Recovery Phrase

After writing down all 24 words, your Ledger will quiz you. It will ask you to confirm specific words (e.g., "What is word #14?"). Use the buttons (Nano) or touchscreen (Stax/Flex) to select the correct answer. This ensures you wrote down the phrase correctly.

7

Install Apps and Add Accounts

Your Ledger is now set up. In Ledger Live, go to "My Ledger" to install cryptocurrency apps. Each blockchain requires its own app:

  • Bitcoin app -- for BTC
  • Ethereum app -- for ETH and all ERC-20 tokens
  • Solana app -- for SOL and SPL tokens
  • And 100+ more available apps

After installing apps, go to "Accounts" and click "Add Account" for each cryptocurrency you want to manage. Ledger Live will generate a unique address for each coin.

Security Best Practices

Store your recovery phrase in multiple locations -- consider a fireproof safe and a safety deposit box.

Consider a metal backup -- engrave your recovery words on steel plates to protect against fire and water damage.

Always verify addresses on screen -- before sending crypto, double-check the address displayed on your Ledger matches the intended recipient.

Keep firmware updated -- regularly check for firmware updates in Ledger Live to get the latest security patches.

Use a strong PIN -- at least 6 digits, avoid obvious patterns.

Test with small amounts first -- send a small test transaction before moving significant holdings.
